FAQs
Q: Why should this book not be censored?
A: Caroline B. Cooney’s The Face on the Milk Carton should not be banned because it teaches kids to confront the truth and not let the past ruin their future. Seeking the truth and dealing with it is an important part of life. When Janie learns found out she was kidnapped, she panicked but then took the steps to face the future. Although at first she couldn't cope with the facts, she eventually moved on and went back to her original parents.
Q: Is the book the Face on the Milk Carton inappropriate?
A: The book is inappropriate but only is a problem for an immature audience. Plus, the lesson the Face on the Milk Carton teaches is more important than the very small inapproriate portions of the book.
Q: Is it not a good thing to shield inappropriate topics from children that are too immature?
A: It all depends on the scenario. I would say yes to a book like the outsiders where the themes of gang fighting, drugs, and alcohol, are present throughout the entire book. However, in a book like the Face on the Milk Carton, the challenging points only appear three or four times throughout the entire book. Therefore, I do not believe for this book we need to censor it for its immaturity.
